THE METHOD
The Saint Nicholas method, a result of more than
twenty-five years of experience in school management, guides the student into
success. Level placements are made to
create the effective combination of challenge and the personal attention
allowed by smaller groups. Teacher to
students ratios vary from 1:4 to 1:18 according to age. The Saint Nicholas Levels System transcends
grade placement and allows students to work up to two years behind or beyond
their grade without changing their chronological age/grade. Students who are working below grade level must
improve to grade level within two years or by the end of fifth grade. Students working above grade level are given
appropriate advanced work.
Once assigned to a level for
homeroom, the level becomes the student's basis for work in all subjects with
the exception of mathematics, which may differ. Textbooks, assignments, and tests follow the curriculum
requirements of the school for each subject and level, and percentage grades
are usually given. Homework is assigned
daily for elementary and middle school, and is entered into an Assignment
Planner that chronicles each day's homework, any notes from teachers, or
notices from the school. Parents are
requested to sign this notebook every evening and write notes to the teacher if
needed. Parents may also telephone the
office any day to request a call from a teacher.
